Gabi Schillig (2023)

Dates of residency: Term 6:10/9~11/3 2023

Gabi Schillig studied Architecture and completed her postgraduate studies in Conceptual Design at the Städelschule – Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste Frankfurt am Main before founding her ‘Studio for Dialogical Spaces’ in Berlin in 2008.
She has exhibited internationally and received several fellowships and prizes, amongst others: Van Alen Institute New York, USA (2009), Nordic Artists’ Centre Dale, Norway (2010). In 2021 she exhibited her bilateral project „bodies without organs*“ (deleuze, guattari) in collaboration with Lila Chitayat at the Liebling Haus, Tel Aviv, Israel and in Berlin.
Furthermore in 2021 she worked as a curatorial advisor for the international exhibition “LOOK! Revelations on Art and Fashion” at the Marta Herford – Museum for Architecture, Art and Design.

From 2012 to 2018 she served as Professor for Spatial Design at the Peter Behrens School of Arts Düsseldorf. In April 2018 she was appointed as Professor for Spatial Design and Exhibition Design at the Berlin University of the Arts at the Institute for Transmedia Design/Visual Communication.

In her artistic practice and teaching, Gabi Schillig investigates contemporary and future questions of spatial design, such as the relationship between space and body, the potentials of materiality, and the experimental use of analogue and digital design methodologies. Her conceptual approach results in multi-sensorial, dialogical structures – responsive architectures – on multiple scales and in different contexts within cities and landscapes that are based on social and physical processes and that connect materiality and interaction in an immediate way.

During her residency, Gabi focused on preparing for her solo exhibition planned at Kobo Chika, Tokyo. She explored the possibilities of soft matter, a concept shared by Japanese architecture and philosophy, delving into ephemeral spaces, and presented a series of works titled “soft space machines“ . These pieces were created using large sheets of Japanese washi paper sourced locally and a large laser-cutting machine from a Japanese company.

She fully embraced her time in Japan, absorbing the advanced craftsmanship found in Japanese society. The resulting exhibition was an extremely gratifying achievement for SAIKONEON as well.
