Mathieu Fiorentini (2024)

Dates of residency: Term 2:6/10~7/5 2024
Mathieu Fiorentini (Yakie) is a French artist and audio designer working across sound and visual art. He is offering moments of levitation that feel close to the soul—standing with one foot in electro and the other in ambient. He is composing utopian landscapes that are both dance-oriented and aerial, sculpting their contours from organic and electric matter. He is creating tracks of melancholy and jubilation—an emotional roller coaster.
His universe is centering on a piano/synths/ambient ensemble. Drawing from Rival Consoles, Four Tet, and Rone, his music is also unfolding through video and interactive media.
In 2024, released the two-track EP Healer and completed two artistic residencies (La Boule d’Or and P.A.F.) in a former chapel exploring interactions between broken pipe organs and solenoid motors; in 2022, composed and produced the seven-track EP HACT with support from Fond Régnier; and in 2021, undertook residencies at RedHouse Studio to record acoustic drums and grand piano.
During his stay, Mathieu made remarkable use of both our facilities and the surrounding natural landscape, achieving diverse outcomes in composition, recording, and sound experimentation.
Guided by curiosity and initiative, he explored the Fuji region extensively—often by bicycle, which he brought from France—conducting his own artistic and environmental research. He carried out numerous field recordings and sound experiments across the lake and within the Aokigahara forest, integrating the subtle acoustic layers of nature into his music.
Within our site, he also converted a small trailer house into a studio, where he devoted long hours to focused composition and performance.
In addition to sound, Mathieu actively worked on visual documentation, using his camera, smartphone, and drone to direct and produce footage that extended his musical ideas into visual form.
