Sam Wilde (2024)

Dates of residency: Term 4: 8/13~9/7 2024
Sam Wilde is a multidisciplinary British artist known for his contemporary approach to fine-art pattern and surface design, combining bold colour, illustration, and a distinctive worldbuilding sensibility. He is also the founder of Vespertine, a luxury British interiors, fashion, and homeware brand dedicated to translating fine-art patterns into crafted objects for everyday spaces.
Wilde studied Natural Sciences (BSc Hons) at Durham University before working in London’s financial sector as a raw materials trader, later completing an MA in Printed Textiles at the Royal College of Art. His work has received multiple design and art awards and grants, and he has collaborated with brands and institutions including Adobe, Apple, British Airways, Fortnum & Mason, Liberty, the National Trust, Nvidia, Svenskt Tenn, and the V&A. He has exhibited at venues such as Liberty London, Svenskt Tenn (Strandvägen 5), Turner Contemporary, and the V&A, and has held solo exhibitions across major cities in China. Wilde’s practice spans illustration, oil painting, animation, sculpture, and large-scale installation, informed by his experience of synesthesia and an ongoing interest in evolutionary biology.
During his stay at SAIKONEON, Wilde immersed himself in the production of large-scale paintings. He spent the early part of the residency moving through the Lake Saiko area at an unhurried pace, relaxing and conducting research. Drawing from his observations and documentation of the surrounding landscape, he translated the region’s vast natural environment into his own vivid, colour-saturated motifs.
The paintings he began during the residency were later developed further and ultimately presented through a subsequent artist-in-residence program in Kobe.
