Steffi Hofer (2023)

Dates of residency: 7/10~8/4 2023

Steffi Hofer  has studied speech science and phonetics at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Germany for four years. After obtaining a degree as a linguist and completing postgraduate studies for clinical linguistics, she is currently a professor at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK), teaching at the Faculty of Drama and Musical Performance.
Additionally, she is actively involved as a speech coach at the renowned Burgtheater in Austria, a significant theater in the German-speaking world.
In her Research she discovered logical connections between vocalisation and vision on the basis of various methods – and was incredibly impressed. She refined her perception by learning the Talmi Method®, which confirmed her assumptions.
This is profoundly meaningful to her. To rise even with a broken leg. To listen to her inner voice. To make vision and voice, body and breathing, listening and speech her lifelong mission. And always, to look behind the curtain that obscures the whole, asking questions with the aim of inspiring disruption. Just because things are the way they are does not mean that they have to stay that way.

During her stay at SAIKONEON, she conducted various workshops and writing activities. She led workshops with approximately 10 participants from performing arts, emphasizing vocalization techniques and incorporating the entire body. Particularly, she guided participants in exploring the relationship and interactions between eyes and voice, brain and body movements, and the mind, conducting practical exercises. The results were discussed and recorded collaboratively. She utilized forest settings as stage”BUTAI” and efficiently utilized a trailer house at the campsite, spending the hot Japanese summer immersed in her activities.

In Tokyo, she was a part of the photo exhibition “In a Glimpse Once Again” by her residency participant and photographer Siyan Camille Ji  with her practice “a play of awareness”.
▮For instance:
Breathe with your eyes,
see with the ears,
hear with your mouth.
