Marianna Christofides

Marianna Christofides (born in Nicosia, lives in Berlin) works cross-disciplinary, mainly with installations, film and text.
In 2011 she represented Cyprus at the Venice Biennale. Christofides studied painting, media art and film in Athens, London and at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.
In 2020/21 she was a fellow of the Berlin Artistic Research Grant Programme and in 2020 she received the VISIT grant from the E.ON Foundation. In 2019 Christofides was a finalist for the Berlin Art Prize, in 2018 a scholarship holder at Villa Kamogawa, Kyoto and in 2014 she received the Villa Aurora Fellowship, Los Angeles. The artist was awarded numerous grants and prizes, including IfA, Berlin Senate Department, Hartware Media Artist Prize, Academy of the Arts of the World, Art Foundation NRW, Jean-Claude Reynal Foundation, and DAAD. Christofides exhibits and screens her work internationally, most recently at the Akademie der Künste Berlin, mumok Vienna, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest, Chicago Film Society. Publications include “Days In Between”, Hatje Cantz (2021).

She stayed at SAIKONEON together with Bernd Bräunlich for filming the Yoshida Fire Festival.
It was the first time in three years that the fire festival was held completely!
She shot for two days with a large 16mm film camera brought from Germany. Additional recordings of a wasps’ nest found on site were made on the stage of SAIKONEON facility (BUTAI). After her stay at SAIKONEON, she continued her research and filming in various parts of Japan.
